[edit] What's a small tractor?
Small tractors, often known (in North America) as compact tractors, compact utility tractors, or estate tractors, are smaller versions of large tractors. Ideally, they should be as versatile and heavy-duty as the bigger guys, with less power and a lower price tag.
Compact tractors are usually considered to be in the 20-50 hp range, while subcompact usually refers to compacts under 30 hp. They have most or all of the following features:
- diesel engine
- rear power take-off (PTO) - to power attachments like a rototiller
- mid-mounted PTO - usually found on sub-compacts, typically to power a lawn mower deck
- 3-point hitch - standard for attaching implements, like a rototiller
- front-end loader - a common option
- 4-wheel drive
Particularly subcompacts may come with turf tires rather than the usual agricultural (ag) tires. Turf tires have a smoother, less aggressive tread than ag tires, making them less likely to tear up lawns, in exchange for less traction.

Compacts can use any of the implements available for larger tractors, but they generally have to be smaller versions. The amount of power available limits the size of the implement, and therefore, the size of the jobs they can perform, and how quickly a job gets done. For example, a subcompact may be able to power a 48" wide rototiller, but not a 60" or 72" tiller.
Common implements for compacts include:
- box blade
- grader blade
- landscape rake
- post hole digger (or post hole auger)
- rotary cutter (also called a slasher or brush hog)
- mid- or rear-mount mower
- broadcast seeder
- subsoiler
- rototiller
- snowblower
[edit] Cost
Very broadly, compact tractors with no attachments start at around $7-10,000US for a fairly recent, good-condition used model (under 1,000 hours use), and $15-20,000US new, for under 30hp. Implements like a front-end loader and rototiller, purchased new, can add $3,000-5,000US each. Used machines often come with a loader.
[edit] Smaller than compact...
Below the compact tractor class are garden tractors, lawn tractors and riding mowers. Definitions for each vary and often overlap, and the terms are sometimes used interchangeably. In general, these machines are smaller than compacts, often of lighter-duty construction, often with gas rather than diesel engines, and often don't have standard PTOs and hitches. However, a range of attachments suitable for landscaping, estate/small farm maintenance, and small-scale agriculture may be available for some.
[edit] Tractor alternatives
Tractors are expensive, no doubt. On the small farm, there are alternatives. One is the 2-wheel tractor, more popular in Europe than North America. These are walk-behind machines, engineered to the same heavy-duty standards as their 4-wheel counterparts. They have an extensive line of accessories, for farm work, landscaping, and snow removal.
Work horses also a viable option. You have to maintain your work animals daily, year-round.
And then there's the manual approach. Specialized hand tools like the broadfork and the scythe can accomplish basic tractor functions like plowing, tilling, mowing down for relatively large areas (at least an acre), at a much slower rate. Depending on how skilled and energetic you are.

There are the well-known brands from major manufacturers (John Deere, Kubota, etc), and lesser-known brands (e.g. Branson).
Reliability is obviously the number one concern.
Availability of parts and service are also extremely important, especially parts.

Many people lament the demise of General Electric's ELEC-TRAK electric garden tractor, which was available in the 1970s under several different brand names. Some, but not many, of these are still around doing useful work. As you can imagine, parts can be difficult to come by and keeping them running is truly a labor of love. After you get a tractor and begin collecting attachments, implements and accessories for it, you'll want to keep everything out of the weather. As alternatives to a traditional garage or shed, the following companies manufacture inexpensive, portable, "soft" building kits in a variety of shapes and sizes that make ideal shelters for equipment.
Note: If you decide on this type of structure, two features are essential for the well-being of your machinery: ventilation, so the building can "breathe" and a moisture-proof floor, so that dampness from the ground does not invade the space and cause mildew, corrosion or rust. Ventilation can be provided by a pair of louvered vents, high up on opposing sides of the building. A good vapor barrier for the floor is a sheet of heavy gauge vinyl or polyethylene.
